Recognition

There are a lot of ways to say “thank you” to coworkers, peers, employees, and customers.
Some companies use gifts or incentives, while other create awards or trophies. These are
wonderful ways to motivate employees to try harder or recognize a business or partner that
has helped out you and yours, but can get repetitious or problematic. Money is always
welcome, but there’s a point when someone feels as though their kindnesses are being bought
off rather than welcomed. In addition, Business owners may simply not have enough available
cash to make these types of gifts as readily available as needed.

One of the easiest, most economic, and instantly rewarding ways to achieve fulfillment is giving
someone recognition. Whether you call it a shout-out or wordfame, identifying someone by
name and saluting them publicly costs you nothing, but provides the recipient validation. This
can be as simple as a webpage or social media post highlighting what the person did that you
feel needs to be recognized, or it can be a note or thank you card thumbtacked to their office
space. It’s more than giving a quick thank-you in a phone call; people like seeing their name in
print emphasized alongside their deeds, and recognition goes a long way to initiating happiness
and the need to keep giving.

With availability comes opportunity. Look for ways to give shout-outs to the people you work
with or for, as well as associates, friends, and family who offer advice and assistance
throughout the community. Finding reasons to extol the virtues of others is a two-way street
that can result in amplified support in the neighborhood and beyond.
