Reach vs. Impressions vs. Engagement: What’s the Difference?

If you’ve ever peeked at your social media analytics, you’ve probably come across terms like reach, impressions, and engagement. They sound similar, and it’s easy to lump them together, but they each measure something different. Knowing what they mean can help you figure out what’s working, what’s not, and where to focus your efforts.

Let’s break them down.

Reach is simply the number of different people who saw your post. If 500 unique people scroll past your latest Facebook update, your reach is 500. Think of reach as your audience size… It’s a good way to see how many potential customers you’re getting in front of.

Impressions count the total number of times your post was displayed. That means the same person can count more than once. Maybe they saw your post in their feed, then again because a friend shared it, and later while browsing your business page. That’s still one person reached, but three impressions. A higher number of impressions usually means your content is getting repeated exposure, which can help people remember your business.

Then there’s engagement… arguably the most important metric of the three. Engagement is all about action. It includes likes, comments, shares, saves, clicks, video views, and other ways people interact with your content. Reach and impressions tell you people saw your post. Engagement tells you they actually connected with it.

Think of it this way: imagine you’re at a local festival with a booth promoting your business. Hundreds of people walk past: that’s your reach. Some of them pass by several times during the day: that’s your impressions. But the people who stop to chat, ask questions, sign up for your newsletter, or buy something? That’s engagement. And those are the interactions that really matter.
