Resolve to Be Better in 2020

As we end one year and begin both a new year and a new decade, let’s all resolve to be more positive on social media in 2020.

The world is filled with enough contention and negativity without multiplying it on social media. These serve only to magnify and expand the effects on even more people. It can also affect our personal, supporter and client relationships.

Whether you use social media for personal, work or volunteer purposes, keep in mind the image that you are portraying to the world and who is going to see what you post. Employers and future potential employers, co-workers, clients and potential clients, current and potential supporters, friends, family, professional peers…these are just some of the people and relationships that can be affected by what they see and read on your social media.

Some people will say, “I don’t care, it’s my page and I’ll share what I want. If they don’t like it, they don’t have to follow me.” While this is true, why would you want to alienate people? Why damage or ruin existing or possible new relationships? If you’re not worried about hurting others, at least worry about how you will hurt yourself with negative and controversial posts.

Social Media has the potential to be a great tool for you to build relationships, both personally and professionally, if you use it properly. It is the ultimate networking and relationship building tool – when you can’t connect in person – making it easy to keep in touch and share things that matter to your crowd.

Take a look back on your posts in 2019. What kind of impression did they give your followers? What kind of attitude did they project? Do you like what you see in those posts? You may find that you see ups and downs in your tone, which is emotionally normal for most people, but not good on social media. If you are feeling down or angry, call or visit your best friend or a family member, but keep your message on social media positive.

As we enter the year 2020, let’s all resolve to keep our posts positive, cheerful and uplifting. Use it to make people feel better about you and their relationship with you. Use it to make them feel better about themselves. Use it to gain customers and build better relationships, goodwill and community. Share the happy, positive, funny, uplifting, inspirational, educational, entertaining, feel-good kind of messages that can turn social media into your greatest brand builder.
