Be A Social Media Champion

Your personal social media page is a reference, a reflection of who you are, and creates an image.

If you’re doing social media for your own business, or on behalf of others, your personal social media presence matters. In Public Relations, the face of the person delivering the message has an impact. If the person behind the message is trusted, the message has more impact. You, personally, matter. You are the “social” part of the equation. Otherwise, what you are posting is just another ad. It may be a great ad, but people are most drawn to people.

If you want to maximize your efforts as a social media champion, be certain your personal social media presence is reflective of the values of the businesses and organizations you represent.

Here are some suggestions:

1.    Social Media is social. Be seen and involved in the community. People will pay more attention to what you post.

2.    Don’t curse on social media!! Just don’t.

3.    Avoid controversial issues. You may think you are just posting to your friends and family but assume all you say is public.

4.    Praise publicly. Criticize someplace else – not on social media. Most of those seeing it have no context in which to place your criticism. Often, their first thought is “I don’t want that person mad at me” or, worse yet, “I don’t want that person.”

5.    Be the person on social media that you would want to do business with, and for most people that means trustworthy, positive and upstanding.

You – who you are and how you present yourself – is important too. It’s not just about the posts you create for your business or organization. You can be a powerful part of the equation. Make a difference.
