Designing for Social Media: Think “Billboard”, not “Pamphlet”
When it comes to promoting your business on social media, your visuals need to do some serious heavy lifting. With users scrolling at lightning speed while only ever paying half-attention, a graphic has to grab that attention instantly. This means bold, eye-catching visuals should be your top priority. Keep your focus on strong colors, clean design, and high-quality images that reflect your brand’s personality.
Think of these like billboards. Your potential customer might not be in a car zipping by at 60, but they might as well be, for how fast most people cruise past posts online. But unlike a billboard, if you can catch their attention, these customers CAN stop and look with more detail.
Text in the graphic should be used sparingly. A clear headline and maybe a short subhead or call to action are all you need to grab eyes. If you try to cram your entire sales pitch into the image, you’re likely to lose people before they even read a word. Save the details for the caption, where there’s more room to explain.
